Philips unveils Wi-Fi lamp

Philips unveils Wi-Fi lamp

Philips Hue allows users to control light using a smartphone or tablet. It will only be available in Apple stores, priced at £179 for a kit containing three lamps.

Unlike other similar lamps, the Hue does more than just dim and turn on and off on a timer. Among other things, it enables colour temperature to be picked, scenes to be created and saved based on photographs, and a sunrise wake-up call to replace the unwelcome screeches of an alarm clock. The lamp can display different tones of white light from warm to cool, as well as recreating any colour in the spectrum.

The Hue mobile app features LightRecipes, four pre-programmed lighting settings based on Philips’ research around the biological effects of light on the body. These scenarios adjust the lamps to the optimum shade and brightness to help users relax, read, concentrate or energise.

Jeroen de Waal from Philips said: ‘Philips Hue is a game-changer in lighting – a completely new way to experience and interact with light. In the way phones, media and entertainment have been revolutionised by digital technology, now we can also personalise light and enjoy limitless applications.’

Philips is working on new features to be added in future, such as allowing Hue to integrate with other media. It is also working on geolocation services, allowing Hue to sense when the user is close to home and automatically turn on the lights, or turn them off when the person leaves.

A starter pack includes three lamps that screw into existing fittings and a bridge that plugs into a Wi-Fi router, and the app can be downloaded to mobile devices for free.
